Screen Media Acquires The Nan Movie Based on Catherine Tates’ “Nan,” a Foul-mouthed Grandmother

NEW YORK, N.Y.

Published on: June 14, 2022

Screen Media, a Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment (Nasdaq: CSSE) company, announced today the acquisition of all North American rights to the road trip comedy The Nan Movie.

An origin story that mixes Nan’s past with her present, the film stars Catherine Tate (The Office, Doctor Who) playing the young and old versions of the character alongside Mathew Horne, Katherine Parkinson, Parker Sawyers, Tom Vaughan-Lawlor, Jack Doolan and Niky Wardley. Written by Tate and Brett Goldstein (Ted Lasso) and produced by Damian Jones, the film is executive produced by Kieran Corrigan, Catherine Tate, Jim Reeve, Robert Halmi, Josie Rourke, Fay Davies, Norman Merry and Peter Hampden. Screen Media is planning a day-and-date theatrical, and on-demand release this July.

Catherine Tate’s iconic character Joannie Taylor AKA Nan hits the big screen as she goes on a wild road trip from London to Ireland with her long-suffering grandson Jamie to make amends with her estranged and dying sister Nell. Through a series of flashbacks, we see the young sisters fall in love with the same handsome GI during World War 2 and how the consequences of this love triangle shaped Nan into the cantankerous old b*****d she is today. Militant vegan arsonists, Australian rugby teams, all-night raves, and crazed cops on motorbikes all make for a proper day out. Hilarious, action-packed, and surprisingly moving, this film is a love letter to outrageous, outspoken old ladies everywhere.

Writer and actor Catherine Tate has worked extensively on stage and screen. Her multi-award-winning BBC series The Catherine Tate Show ran for three seasons and spawned several spin-offs based on her Nan characterShe is also well known for playing Donna Noble opposite David Tennant in Doctor Who and appealing in the U.S version of The Office as Nellie Bertram. She can currently be seen in her new series, Hard Cell on Netflix and will return to screens as Donna Noble next year in Doctor Who to coincide with the show’s 60th anniversary.

“I am delighted that Nan will be making her way across the pond and launching herself onto unsuspecting audiences with her first road movie,” said Catherine Tate in a statement. “Buckle up kids, it’s going to be a heck of a ride.”

“Nan is such a beloved character as played by the charismatic and hilarious Catherine Tate,” said Screen Media in a statement. “Screen Media can’t wait to introduce even wider audiences to this special brand of comedy by releasing The Nan Moviestateside.”

“Hello Sweethearts, full disclosure, anyone who is easily offended should f**k off now!” said Nan herself.
